Please can you tell me how to ascertain the sex of Eleagnus as two of my three do not produce the small fragrant flower beneath the evergreen healthy leaves none of which are variagated,many thanks for any advice .

Agree with Landgirl - all Elaeagnus are able to flower, not being divided into male/female plants (like Skimmia or Ilex, which are). There's obviously another cause for the lack of flower on the two plants. Like dry conditions, pruning at the wrong time, that sort of thing.

Elaeagnus has bisexual flowers. If your plants are not flowering they may be stressed in some way.
