I have had a Clematis Armandii hanging around in a pot for a few weeks and need to plant it. I know it needs good sun but will it be ok on an East facing fence. I do get the sun on that border till at least 2 pm.

No. C. Armandii needs a sheltered South-facing aspect, especially in the north.
These plants are monsters, by the way, and will grow to over 30 feet.

Thank you for your advise. Will I be able to contain the size by pruning. But if I do prune will I possibly lose the flowers.

Difficult to keep small - pruning should be done immediately after flowering, but the plant puts on a lot of growth during the season even with that, and cutting it all back late summer by a lot will mean losing flowers.

I did grow one in a large pot on an East facing trellis, it did quite well, it was in a sheltered position, but outgrew it's pot too quickly and had to be transpanted in the ground.

It prefers a south or west facing aspect, which helps to prevent the flowers being damaged by cold easterly or northerly winds, and where you live, that might be quite an important consideration. But the most important thing to consider when planting is where you have a spot, in sun, that allows for this plant to reach 4-8 metres (26+ feet) in height, with a 1.5 to 2.5 metre spread
