I'm really confused about how you know which way a wall or fence is facing. If I stand in my living room with a compass looking out on my garden it tells me I am facing north west. Does this mean that the wall at the end of my garden is facing south west? And even more confusing (well for me anyway) when the wind is described as a North wind is it coming fron the north or going in a northernly direction??? Help.

Bamboo, am I right in saying if you face towards North in your garden then the wall at your back is North facing wall?

Bamboo - think I've got it!
Aimankay - that's what confused me but with Bamboo's little trick that wall would be south facing on your side but north facing on the other side....is that right Bamboo?

roughly speaking the next time we have a very sun drenched day it will rise in the east and set in the west, providing your not to obstructed from it north at the top and south at the bottom can be worked out, bit of a guide.its a help for planting (which ones prefer shade, sun etc)

Stand with your back to the wall in question and turn the compass until the pointer is facing the N. looking at the compass, which ever direction is pointing away from you is the direction your wall is facing. For instance, if north is running parallel to your wall on your left then your wall is east facing, if it's the other way on, (i.e. pointing right) then your wall is west facing.
Errrrr................ I think? ;~))

Oh gawd blimey, Ian, that's even confused me, lol! If you stand in front of the wall, with it at your back, and hold your compass, whatever it tells you is which way the wall is facing, because that's the way you are facing. Test it by turning round and facing the wall - the compass should swing to the opposite end, and that tells you which way the other side of the wall faces, cos that's where you're facing. Stand in front of each fence of wall, with it at your back, look at the compass, whatever it tells you is which way the structure faces, but you have to have your back to it. Does that help?
Aimankay, that only works if, a) you know where north is and b) there is, in fact, a wall at your back.
You obviously have a compass Gaia, but if you didn't, as long as you know where the sun comes up, you can work it out anyway. If you stand with the rising sun on your right, then north is facing you, east is on your left, and south is behind you. All very simple in a north or south facing area, not so easy if you have, say, a north east area, or a south west one, but still can be done without a compass.

Glad you cleared that up Bamboo.....ow my head hurts, but I think I've got it...basically stand with my back to the fence/wall and use my compass in the usual way and thats the way the wall/fence is facing. And I thought gardening was going to be a nice, easy hobby LOL....

No, it means the wall at the end of your garden, if its facing you where you're standing with your compass, faces south east - and north wind means coming from the north. It helps if you draw on a piece of paper a four point thing, with N at the top, E on the right, S at the bottom and W on the left. Or, if you want to work out which way a fence or wall is facing, stand in front of it with your back to it and then read the compass - what it says then is which way the wall or fence is facing.
