Is it becoming too cold to leave tomatoes out? Exeter has a forecast of 8 degrees tonight and I'm wondering whether my tumbling toms in a hanging basket would rather be moved somewhere warmer. I know that changes in temperature can cause splitting. They are only just starting to ripen.

Well I'd move 'em, unless they're in a very sheltered spot, it was unusually cold here in London last night too...

We're leaving our tumblers out for now, but they're growing in mangers on a house wall which faces south-west. If they were anywhere else, we'd be bringing them inside.

I live in London and I don't have the space to bring my tomatoes indoors. Hence, they are still growing out on the terrace and thankfully I have not seen more than the occasional split yet.

On the weather forecast map for last night, Devon and Cornwall were cold - down to 4 degrees in some places...

No splitting yet despite cold nights . I think I'll put them in plastic greenhouse and be on the safe side. It's been hot during the day but I can't keep putting them out and moving them late afternoon because I need ladders to reach them. Once I move them, they will stay there. The idea of a cover won't work for me for the same reason.
Thankyou everyone for helping me decide.

I think it's going to be a green tomato chutney year for me. My tomatoes are so late, both growing and ripening, and they're under glass. We are beginning to get some ripening so perhaps there's still hope...
