Euonymus fortunii flowers
I took a few cuttings from Silver Queen (or perhaps it was Emerald gaiety, I didn't label them) And included a shoot that had reverted as I needed a small evergreen.
The cuttings are still very small but the green one has suddenly produced a buttercup yellow flower. Anybody heard of this before please?

same here .i mean normally a cutting would devote all its energy into making roots...it could be a cycle the plant [eg blooms in spring, dies in autum ect]normaly goes through but i wonder if anyone knows... ive never had much luck with any sort of branch, only stems :/

Looks much more like a Euonymus japonica flower, so maybe your cutting was from a variety of that rather than E. fortunei, though they're not usually such a deep yellow, more pale primrose...

I haven't got any others Bamboo, just Silver queen, Emerald gaiety and Emerald n gold.

Weird then... maybe the green growth produces different flowers (joke...)!

Not really a joke, because it has ....Interesting to grow the plant a bit more and see it the mature bush gets covered with them!

The flower looks much like one of the yellow flowering jasmines, but the foliage is definitely Eunonymus.

Strange isn't it?

Fascinating.......they're not grafted of course but I'm wondering how the breeders grow the variegated varieties in the first place
I've never seen my 'sunspot' euonymus flower, its a quite different
leaf to the fortunii.......
grow on Stera ☺

Anyone think that looks like Forsythia? There are a few flowers on mine at the moment.

Yes but the stem doesn't....

It does a bit, but you don't normally get forsythia flowers on Euonymus cuttings, which this definitely is. The parent plant has never had flowers remotely like this. I only took the reverted shoot off the parent because I wanted a small evergreen - won't it be nice if I get a flowering one?
Pam I think the breeders take cuttings from accidental sport shoots - Bamboo will know. Anyway if we're all still here in a few years I'll be able to tell you...could be a while as the parent is 10 years old.

Well, close examination reveals structure like a Euonymus--not sure which one--but I've never seen one that pretty yellow color before! Here's hoping that it is consistent.

Yea, if it does that every year, Stera, we'll all be asking for cuttings - except there's that problem with euonymus flowers and flies, so maybe not!
23 Sep, 2015
Well maybe Euonymus steragramii will not have the same problem ?

I like the sound of that Pam!
Tug, there was never any doubt that it is a Euonymus fortunii. I clearly remember taking three cuttings from the same bush. They have been grown on together and the other two are normal. As I said in my question it was from Emerald Gaiety ( remembered now that it wasn't Silver Queen)
I haven't seen a fly on it so far Bamboo...

Sorry, Steragram. I was so flabbergasted by the flower, that I was trying to see if it was anything other than an Euonymus, and forgot that you, personally, took the cuttings! Oops!

Me who should apologise Tug - shouldn't have got sniffy.
It is very puzzling isn't it. Its still in flower too so it would be nice if I got a unique little flowering evergreen!

Euonymus fortunei 'Steragram's Golden Garland'! :)

I like it! A bit optimistic though - only one flower to date!

No Stera, over time I've taken lots of emerald n gold and emerald gaiety but never from a reverted branch, I'll watch the question with interest
