We planted a cherry tree (gean) circa 10 years ago and have just noticed that one of the roots has appeared just below the grass. the tree is very healthy but my husband has now hit it with his ride on mower. What to do?

well they are shallow rooted and the mower damage wont be fatal but it will affect the appearance of the grass. its typically their growth habit I'm afraid. if its the only one it is probably just the first. you could remove it but personally I wouldn't.

Check the mower for any damage to it.

Agree, its what cherry trees do. They will lift concrete if planted next to a drive.

How do I say thanks?
