Hard getting it right.
I got some plugs a few weeks ago & got ready for 36 + 72 plants. Some arrived too wet & I could not save them so it was 36 + 50. I released 2 x 6 into the garden as they are fairly hardy. So 24 + 50 were in an unheated bedroom. Working when to water & not water has been tough. If you over water its hard to recover but under watering (every other day) is really tough. Of the 36 all but 4 are out. And about 30 of the 50 are in. Some plants are twice as big but one false move & its curtains. Am I mad to try without a green house?

No madder than the rest of us, Bill! Obviously, a greenhouse or cold frame would help but we all have to do with what we've got.
I trust that you are asking a gardening question and that this is not one of those 'A' Level maths exam questions that none of he kids can understand :)))))

Well, since you asked the question, yes, I think you're nuts!:-)))

I think that plug plants might be useful to buy in spring, if that's your thing, when they're growing more rapidly and won't be indoors for too long (although I think they're a pain even then, if they're very small plugs, but each to his own). This time of year, you've given yourself an intensive care programme which will occupy you daily for the next few months - fine if you've got not much else to do or you like a challenge or you're an extremely dedicated plant grower. I suppose it gives one something to do during the darker days of winter, and possibly a bit of 'light at the end of the tunnel' feeling, knowing that you will, in a few months, be planting these babies out. I haven't got the patience, personally, I get really irritated knowing I can't really provide what they need to grow on properly and just wish I'd waited till early spring...

I don't think you're nuts, just keen, but would have bought fewer plugs. I wouldn't attempt it myself.Curious to know what plugs you are buying at this time of year with nowhere to keep them?

I'm with Bamboo and Stera, we haven't a clue really what sort of winter we're heading into so baby plants are a big worry, and the results questionable

even the spring ones can be so small that half the summers over before they flower so I gave up and use a small local nursery......

Hindsight is a great thing. I do have an unheated bedroom but the constant monitoring is a pain. Oddly enough I have plugs from last year flowering & doing well. They were spring & summer ones.

Ah, well, there you go, spring and summer ones... much harder autumn/winter with plugs. Don't fret too much - its not hindsight really, its just plain old experience - if its too much trouble, you won't repeat it, and maybe some will make it through anyway.
