I live in Argyll. Over the past few years I have been opening new areas of ground to produce vegetables. I have come across a very persistent wiry root that does not appear to have a surface plant. The ground is light clay and I have been using farmyard manure. can anyone identify this root system and tell me how to erase it?

Be as well to change it Ian, as often advice is given taking your home address into account because of climate differences. Just a thought - are you sure the wiry stuff is organic? Or just had a horrible thought - could it be horsetail?

Tree roots? They can spread over really long distances...

We sometimes find thin, wiry black 'roots' (wrong word) that are related to fungi with nothing to show on the surface.

Hi Iain, not an answer to your question but are you in Scotland or the USA?
The persistent wiry root could be couch grass, do you have a problem with that?
