Looks like a rather scruffy going over Weigela to me... in other words one dieing back for the autumn/winter.

Hmm...I was thinking a Spiraea japonica, Nellie.

I reckon Spirea's more likely. Have a look at both on Google Images and see which kind of flowers yours had.

Also, Weigela has opposite leaves--leaves always in pairs--while Spiraea has alternate leaves--leaves one at a time along the stem.
