Screeners..

Hi again..! I'm looking for shrubs that would be good for screening in a woodland garden. Winter-hardy varieties that are not too high or grew out of control but grow pretty quick (preferably), would be great. Any suggestions anyone?

Thanks

Viburnum tinus would be a good choice.

I would recommend Spartan Juniper. It's a fast growing dense columnar conifer that tops out at 20 feet. Very adaptable to many conditions. I planted a row of them for the same purpose. No regrets.

Pyracantha as a specimen shrub or either hedging, evergreen, flowers early summer and red or orange or yellow berries depending on your choice and quick to establish, Viburnham davidii or Bodnantense, sambucus nigra And a reliable performer for this situation is budleija .

Pyracantha is a wickedly thorny bush and yeeouch!! when you try to prune it. It can look gangly if not pruned regularly.

I like Elaeagnus × ebbingei and its sister Elaeagnus × ebbingei 'Limelight' the variegated version. Another that is good but gets big is Prunus lusitanica (Portugese laurel). All quite fast growing, evergreen, thornless and hardy.

i second the Eleagnus, and they are evergreen too. I think the laurel can get untidy when its old but all the other suggestions are great. You might like to pop in a philadelphus just for pleasure in summer.

Maybe some of the hybrid Hollies (Ilex).
