What would be an adequate depth of decorative mulch(colored wood chips) to significantly inhibit weed growth? I will have dahlias, oriental lillies, hyssop, hosta..etc punching their way through the mulch next spring. Thank You

3-4 inches as a bare minimum. if money no object then 4-6 is better still. membrane would be a problem if you didnt cut holes in the right place for your emergent plants.

You might find it helpful to lay down some sort of barrier first, then 3-4 inches of mulch on top. Landscape fabric, cardboard or thick layers of newspaper work well for me - for a while anyway.
