Tried to grow Celeriac this year for the first time. Set seeds, they germinated. Grew on and plated out as per the books. Soil good but not too rich, I use all my own made compost. Plants grew on and stood about 12-14" high.
Finally decided to try the crop. Dug one up only to find there was nothing underneath except masses of hairy roots.
Could see where the bulb should have formed but only roots! What did I do wrong please?

Not the easiest of veg to grow, even if it was the correct seed. Most likely explanation is lack of water. They really need to be grown in a trench which is periodically flooded. They are bog garden plants.

Agree with OB, lack of water would be my answer. I tried to grow them on my stony, free-draining allotment with poor results.

We tried to grow them, once! Never bothered again.

No experience with celeriac, but my celery always seemed to require very rich soil to do well, as well as ample water.

I've never grown either, but my veggie bible tells me that celeriac is a bit easier to grow than celery, although it does require very rich soil and plenty of water. Not that I know, obviously, never having grown them.

You should have been able to see the top of the swollen root above the soil if there'd been one - are you absolutely certain you bought celeriac (or turnip rooted celery) seeds and not just ordinary celery? sorry if you did, and you're sure what you were supplied were actually what they were supposed to be, but its sort of the obvious explanation as to what's gone wrong. Where'd you get the seeds from? Have they supplied the wrong thing?
