I have sown some nicotiana seeds a couple of weeks back but due to lack of space and concern about the conservatory temp at night I put them in airing cupboard for a few days but probably should have took them out a bit earlier- see photo attached, they are rather yellow which I assume is due to lack of light, I have moved them onto kitchen windowsill now, does anyone know if they will recover and be ok?

I would say they may be okay now that their in the window in the light, I bought some bulbs from a supermarket and their growth was white and yellow from where they'd been in their box without light. After a few days in pots in tw warm light on the patio they've gone green :)

Ok thanks- also concerned they maybe a bit leggy aswell as looked at some pics online don't know if they were meant to be that long at this stage, same issue with some tomatoes aswell a few of them shot up very quickly once in the airing cupboard so may need to discard them

It is rather early to be sowing nicotiana as you can plant out until all risk of frost is past. Personally I'd compost those and wait another month before trying again. Sprinkle the seed on the top of your seed compost and do not cover. Keep moist from below but down allow the compost to get over wet and keep well away from the airing cupboard!

I agree - throw them out and start again later. You've probably guessed MG meant to say don't allow the compost to get over wet...
If you only have a windowsill to raise seedlings they will be more likely to grow stronger sown later because they will get more daylight in a month or so. If they germinate too soon they will likely get drawn and leggy grown on an average windowsill if sown now.
You might find it preferable to buy your tomato plants if you only need a few.

Oops thanks for picking that up Stera! And I agree if you only need a few tomatoes plants much easier to buy than grow from seed.

Oh I can remember doing that before I had my greenhouse, too eager even in those days, I also learnt the hard way, If you have some Perlite you could sprinkle some over the seedlings, not a lot a heavy layer and try to leave some of the green tops showing, it might just save a few of them for you, as said it is a bit early for them but what do you have to lose...I would definitely give it a try with the tomato seedlings, their stems will be stronger than the Nicotiana...

Just chuck them and start again in a month!

Decisions decisions...

Well, I would have to say compost them. I have never seen seedlings do well once in that thread-like state. Better to try again later.

Most of us have been there Martin and its a learning curve as with most things just don't let it dishearten you....

Yep! I always say that I got my green thumb the hard way--I've killed at least one of everything that I know how to grow! :)

Haha thanks all for the comments!! I will go and chuck them in the compost bin now!! Definitely too eager when February arrives, trying to get too much started when I don't have the space!!
