We have grown honeysuckle on a willow trellis, attached to the fence at the bottom of the garden. The neighbour behind is changing the fence, so we have to detach the trellis. The honeysuckle is straggly and pointless all the way up the trellis and then fabulous at the top. We bought the plants to make a screen which it hasn't done. If we cut the honeysuckle to the ground when moving the trellis, will it die or will it grow thicker? Any advice greatly appreciated. Thanks :-)

Thanks for your reply Derek. I have 5 Loncera Japonica Halliana. Will cut them back today.

Strictly speaking we are not supposed to attach stuff to party fences that belong to the neighbour so something to bear in mind if and when it starts to grow again. A lot of people do it anyway but you would be responsible for making good any damage if they wanted to be awkward.

Hi, if it's the common honeysuckle, Lonicera periclymenum, this should be pruned back to strong new growth, immediately after flowering every year, to prevent what you have described, these flower mid to late summer, but if they have to be removed, then you can prune them now, but you may get no flowers this year, but they will survive, they're very vigorous growers, Derek.
