sweetcorn, every year i try growing it, only once have i had a successful crop, i plant in april on heat and harden off before planting out in blocks in late may/ early june. my soil is fairly light and free draining, but the plants seem to always be slow in growing and last year i had 2 cobs, very small. any ideas where i'm going wrong???

What are you feeding it, Alunparfitt? Sweet corn needs a fair amount of nitrogen, especially in warm climates. Also, pollination is impaired when night temperatures are above 33º C, or below 15º, resulting in small, "gap-toothed" ears.

hi, thanks for info, i think my adress is confusing, i spend 1/2 year in philippines and from march on in uk for summer season, i can grow nit in philipinnes but in uk??? i'll try more nitro this year and hopefully temps will reach 30oC

Oops! Different problems, then, Alun! Nitrogen may still be a problem, but low temps and lack of sun may have a stronger effect in the UK. I would look for early varieties--those with "days to maturity" of less than 65--and try to site the bed on the sunniest south slope that you can find, or against a south facing wall.

cheers, i've planted an f1 variety in late march on a hot bed, it's showing now and i will harden it off and plant later, it's in toilet roll tubes so hopefully it should have a good root run, alun
