Bought a Passion Flower / Constance Elliott today at local supermarket £1.77 bargain I thought lol it's about 9"-10" looks healthy although only one stem, should I put it in the ground now or put it in a larger pot and keep it a few months, maybe nipping off some top growth so it will bush out a little then plant it in the ground? at the moment it's in a 3" pot, no roots protruding from the bottom as yet final position is an arch mixed with sky's the limit rose / clematis montana & honeysuckle in full sun.

I've watered my clematis every two weeks with miracle grow soluble plant food, works a treat on everything :) great for bulbs too because it feeds them for next years flowers :)

I'd keep it in a pot for while - those small plants are vulnerable, and the forecast this week is for pretty cold weather, specially where you are, so pot it up and just wait a bit till it gets going properly. It should produce new stems from the base with or without cutting back, but you can cut it back a bit if you want.

Thanks Bamboo I wasn't sure on what to do as I know we have some cold weather coming our way over the next few days, and the fact it is quite small thanks again

Clematis. Once in the ground, cover the top of the soil where the Clematis is planted with rocks or gravel as that part of the plant like shade.

I agree with Gail above, all mine are planted at the back of the border and topped with gravel :)

I bought a clematis from a supermarket for that price last year, I stuck it straight in the ground against a piece of wooden trellis and it's now grown to the height of the fence :)
