No - they're S. African plants in origin, so you can tell what conditions they prefer. I almost lost mine last winter...even in this milder area.
Some are herbaceous while others keep their leaves.

They prefer not to have their roots disturbed, but like being in a container, not repotted until they're almost bursting out! So you could grow them in a pot and take it in for the winter.

My mother has a very large one which has been in the ground of her very exposed garden for many years. It grows about 30+ blooms each year.
I did have one in the ground but it outgrew its space and I dug it up this spring, couldn't believe how far the roots had spread! Nothing near it stood a chance. I have another in a half barrel which has also lived out for many years. A blue one which decided to have a white baby this year!
We live on the south coast but my friend in staffordshire lost hers during its first winter.
Maybe it just depends on where you live so I agree with Spritzhenry.
Pots are best.

just been and bought a couple and the nursery/gardens is out in the wilds with pretty bad winters.Owner said theirs survive every year so I am quite hopeful if I find a little sheltered spot they may survive,so will I take a chance?

Mmm, not so sure about the 'little' sheltered spot. From my experience they get quite large in the ground within a few years and steal all the food and drink from anything near them. Ours lose most of their leaves in the winter.
If you have 2 you could try 1 in and 1 out for the winter just to be on the safe side.
Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Seabird is right about the roots - it's impossible to plant anything close to an Agapanthus if it's in the ground. The roots are close to the surface and do spread a long way. If you're happy that you have the space, then follow Seabird's suggestion...I think it's a good compromise.

good idea Seabird.I am in the process of taking up some turf to make a wider border so will have plenty room to plant one. What other plants to they look good with?(ask so much advice don't I)?

You'd need to plant something that would spread out towards it - like Geranium 'Rozanne'...she's a great girl and her colour would be perfect with a blue Agapanthus!

How do I say thanks?
