feed it next spring before new leaves, with top fertiliser, such as blood, fish and bone which you can get at any garden centre, sprinkle around roots and mix in with soil. thats all i do

We don't even do that... you could put some mulch round if you wanted to. It really depends on how good your soil is.

i use general feed in spring but was told to use blood fish and bone mrs MB, but your right i dont think it matters if you feed them depending on soil like you say ;o))
