my old Laurel has got very sparse,what can i do to revive it and get it dense again

Prune. Laurels can stand very hard pruning. The ones at Chirk Castle were cut to 6 inches above ground and have now (takes a few years) grown back to really good strong shrubs.
If you do prune then feed afterwards with a good general fertiliser to help it recover.
