Hi all,
I lifted my daffs and tulip bulbs a couple of weeks ago and have allowed them to dry. Some of the original bulbs have " babies" attached to them. My question is, do I split them from the "mother" before storing or leave them as they are?

I agree leave the babies on. How are you planning to store them? If possible plant them in the ground where you want them to flower. they will be better that way.

Best to leave spring flowering bulbs in the ground they do ar better the following year that way. We've never lifted any of ours... the 'show' ones in pots are un-potted after the foliage has totally died back, and are fed prior to that. Then repotted a few weeks later in fresh compost.

Thanx for your replies.
Normally I would agree that its best to leave spring bulbs in the ground but the area in question is 2 small borders at the front of the house. I needed to make room for my bedding plants. The flowering seemed to be early this year so they were deadheaded sometime ago. I gave them a liquid feed and allowed the foliage to die back before I lifted them. After trimming the foliage and roots I let them dry out in trays. I intend to store them in some brown paper bags and leave these in a cupboard under the stairs.
Best wishes to all.

Keep them cool and dry - doubt a cupboard under the stairs will be cool. If you've planted your bulbs at the correct depth you can just remove the foliage once it has died back and plant the bedding on top of them.

Thanx Moon Grower for your comments. Have stored them in this location before and they have been fine. As regards leaving them in the ground and planting on top, they are tete e tete and because they are small are planted at a depth of 3", doubt that would leave sufficient room for bedding on top. I prefer not to take a chance so I'm happy to lift them. However your thoughts and comments are appreciated.

Hi
Plant them in pots and then plant the pots in the ground , easy to take out when they have finished flowering and they can carry on growing with some xtra TLC.

I leave my tete et tete in situ and the bedding never seems to affect them.

It won't unless the bulbs have been planted too shallowly.

Previous question
Hi
I would leave on as they may dry out too quickly, if still on when you replant and they look fine you can take off then to give them more space to grow
you lifted them very early to dry off ... had all or most of the foliage started to die off as mine have only just done that in the last week and some are still bright green being the last to flower.
