Is there any way you can plant your japanese are in the ground? It will be much, much happier!

Both hot sun and more particularly wind exposure will frazzle japanese acer leaves, but frost not so much. If its in an exposed spot, more likely to be sun or wind, or possibly die back. Moving the plant to more suitable conditions should help, but if its a disease problem, it won't make any difference.
