Does anyone know which iris this is? After 3 years it popped up, I just unearthed it whilst clearing the hedge. I had no idea it was even there!

It's also called Orris. Smells lovely but isn't that great to look at.

Thank you both, might be common but I do like it, and it's full of buds.

Also called Stinking Gladwyn....likes woodland conditions - shade lover.

Thanks stera. In spite of all the horrible names this plant seems to be called, I really like it. It is a delicate, understated plant and excellent for problem areas where nothing else will grow. As I found it almost inside a hawthorne hedge, well hidden behind thick weeds.

I have a clump right up against a conifer hedge so that's saying something about what they will put up with! They will seed around if they are happy enough.
Just out of interest, you used to be able to buy orris root powder which could be used to dry clean things - I had a coat with a fuzzy surface that showed the dirt quickly, and I kept it looking nice with it - must have made a dusty mess when I brushed it out but my tolerant mother never complained...

I just looked up, it can be added to the rinse cycle of your wash leaving laundry lightly scented of violet, or added to lady's powdered wigs! Or to gin or as a diuretic etc. Good stuff. Must have a sniff tomorrow.

It is very like the species iris, Iris foetidissima. If its eventual seed pods open to show red seeds, then that is it.
