this came from a 50' - 60' tree in son Shawn's garden..is it some kind of fern tree?

It could be from a Redwood, Sequoia sempervirens but difficult to tell without photo of the tree.

In Ontario, more likely to be a Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides). They lose their foliage in winter, like a Larch, and have small, round "pine cones", about 1-2 cm wide, rather than berries.

it looks like European yew Taxus baccata. they can grow in excess of 20m and in the uk there are at least 10 that are older than the Norman invasion. Very long lived trees.
if you get 'berries' really called Arils then you have a female tree.
