have just dug up 6 canna lilys and they are each in big clumps, tried to knock off as much dirt as i could but they are real tight clumps, have got them drying out in the table, , but do not know if i need to do more? are they too big?should the dirt be all gone?it is like a net around them.

Canna rhizomes like to stay a little moist and chilly over the winter. Once the soil on them dries so it isn't muddy anymore, I would put them in peat, in perforated plastic bags, so the don't dry out too much, but get some air, and keep them in a cool, frost free place, Ideally between 45º and 55º F, but a little flexibility is possible. When you are ready to replant in spring, you can wash the rhizomes off and divide them.

thanks i do have a lot of peat moss, my garage is separate from the house and not heated, i have several cabinets i wonder if i need to put the cannas in one, for more protection against freezing

That might help, especially if you put a gallon jug of water in with them. Water is really good about absorbing and releasing heat, keeping the temperature even.

thanks for the tips, just afraid of them freezing in the unheated garage

Well, they don't produce heat on their own, so wrapping them up more isn't going to make them any warmer. If it gets that cold in the garage, a small electric space heater in there--not in the cabinet--might make up the necessary 2-3 degrees. I just had a thought: is your car in there? How does it fare?
Otherwise, an unheated pantry in the house might be better.

garage is more of a tool and storage area no car room, i do have a spare bedroom that i close the vents to maybe i will just put them in there for the winter then i know they will not freeze

Cannas are a bit more tropical than Glads, though. In New York, I would dig them up immediately after the first frost, cut off the frozen tops, and store them as for Dahlias. Right now, give them some kelp meal, or Jersey greensand, to plump up the rhizomes, and get them ready for storage.
