i have a lot of conifer trees in my garden is there anything that will grow under the trees?

Try ferns, evergreen and otherwise (evergreen - dryopteris erythrosora, polystichum polyblepharum, cyrtomium, asplenium scolopendrium, and dryopteris affinis, almost evergreen), epimedium, geranium phaeum, euphorbia robbiae (be wary of its invasive habit), ruscus aculeatus, sarcococca. Give them as good a start as possible, and a bit of time. It's amazing how plants want to live. PJ

Mahonia repens is native to dry pine forests in northern Arizona, it might be worth a try.
