How do I know if it has chemicals on it. Where can I go for sod?

When you say " chemicals " there will be a great tendency to infer or guess what you mean. Can you be more specific about the type of chemicals? Are you talking about good chemicals or bad chemicals or chemicals which are good for the sod and bad for humans? ....etc

Sod has a very short shelf life, so reputable garden centers rarely keep sod in stock. On the other hand, most can order it for you, though there is usually a minimum amount, commonly around 500 sq. ft. Sod farms that are run organically are rarer than hen's teeth, so chemical fertilizers, insecticides, and fungicides are the norm, though reputable sod companies wait to harvest the sod until chemicals have had time to dissipate, or at least until the Federally mandated "time until entry" has passed. To be sure, use precautions when rolling out the sod--long sleeves and pants, washable gloves, maybe a mask, if you are very sensitive--and spray well with humic acid or compost tea after installation.

I guess you all mean turf?.......
If you're really concerned why not go for lawn seed....

Sod is a term used in the USA and Turf is the word used in the UK I believe. They both mean a layer, roll or flat, of mature grass with roots within a layer of dirt which is layed down carpet like to quickly establish a lawn and or to prevent eroding of soil. I don't know where this new member lives in the USA(always helps to know a location or growing zone) but the growing season might be quickly coming to an end, too quickly to to well establish a lawn from seed. In that case sod would be the way to go.

Thanks Loosestrife
Theres a temptation with turf/sod to just lay it without all the preparation work.....
I do so agree that location helps, even on our small island there re vast diffrences in climate, must be so much more extreme

Try a reputable garden center. Was the turf treated with chemicals? That's your first question to ask.
