Hello, this is the first time I've used this site and I'm really hoping someone can help. I have a Laburnum tree in my front garden and when I came back from my weeks holiday last week I found a large black patch covering the lawn underneath the tree. When I walk on the grass/moss is sounds quite crunchy. Then I noticed every plant underneath the tree or surrounding it are black and when I stand under the tree it feels like it's spitting with rain (though it isn't raining)! Also there are numerous insects all around the grass and over the tree (flies and wasps mainly). I have posted some photos and would so thankful if someone has the knowledge to help me with this major problem. Thank you,

I'd agree with Louise - it also looks like you're suffering a bit of drought there, or have done - this doesn't help, rainfall helps to clear all the sticky deposits away.

Sounds like an aphid attack judging by that second photo, i have something similar going on here, on some shrubs.
Hopefully other members will be able to confirm this .
If it 'is' spray with an insecticide and the problem will clear itself in a little while.
