We have an arch standing adjacent to a large conifer. The nearside about 5ft from the tunk. On the farside we have a healthyclimbing rose but have had no success growing anything up the nearsde. Any suggestions please?

I suspect this is due to competition from the established conifer roots. Nice pictures of your garden but you appear to have managed to exclude the image of the conifer on both counts Lol.
It will be difficult to get anything to grow there and grow with any vigour if it does. You could stand a large container with good topsoil in that spot and plant into that?
