Please can u tell me what peate is used for?

I have allways used compost and I am wondering what the benifits of peate are? Many thanks artysue.

Peat is inert and sterile and holds an incredible amount of water, so it holds on to any food you add to it long enough for the plant growing in it to use.
It is however, a finite material which takes a long time to produce so its profligate use is not popular any more.
