I asked about campsus, but it is spelt campsis, has suddenly lost its leaves and appears to have suddenly died after a wonderful display this summer. Is this unusual.

Yes, shouldn't lose its leaves till autumn properly arrives. Depending where you live and how long the plant's been in the ground, likeliest explanation is drought.
