My ivy hedge was about 6ft tall and quite old. It collapsed this year when we tried to trim it. We have cut everything down to about 1ft. Could you pls. advise on how to secure it for the future on the assumption that it will grow again?!

I cut down our ivy (so called Tree ivy, but it is just a cutting taken from the non-climbing part of an ordinary plant) every three years and it re-grows, no trouble.
Stopping one from collapsing is not going to be easy, you would need to supply something for it to climb up. Probably need to be a wire netting fence.
