We recently picked this from beside our house and are not sure what they are although we think they are quinces. Can you help please?
Thanks in anticipation

Did they come from a tree or a shrub? If the latter it would have had large white or pink flowers in early spring. Cut one in half. If its seedy central part takes up a lot of the fruit and there's quite a strong acidy smell it should be edible but they are very strongly flavoured and one or two are enough to flavour an apple pie.
Google Chaenomeles fruit to compare.

They might be quinces, but really we need to see a photograph showing the leaves and growth habit of the plant you picked them from
