You are never going to get enough sun to power that veggie garden adequately.

I'd give it a try and see what happens but veggies tend to need my direct sunlight than flowering plants.

An eastern exposure is the preferred one around my area, but that is because of our hot summers. It could be an excellent spot for green leafy veggies, and some roots, as long as they get at least 6 hours of sun a day. If conifers are giving the shade, though, remember that you will need to feed and water for the conifers, as well as the veggies, or grow in large pots, separated from the root-filled soil by bricks or something.

Perpetual spinach, rhubarb and blackcurrants are all worth a try.(even if currants aren't veg...) You don't say how many hours of sun you get - try experimenting. Seed potatoes are cheap enough to trial.

Exactly Stera!

6 hours of direct sun for adequate crop production. Morning sun does not count. They need full force mid-day sun. Additionally, ground roots from the conifers will steal every drop of water and nutrients from your hungry little plants.

Bathgate, we grew veggies for years without mid-day sun and had great success!

Not sure which veggies you're talking about, but tomatoes, corn, peppers & others will languish in the shade.

GoY members in hot, sunny climates like mine value partial shade for tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, and extending the season for leafy greens and some herbs, but it doesn't work so well in cool climates with frequent clouds, such as the UK.

In Staffordshire not many people can grow tomatoes and peppers well outside. I think Peaches is more likely to be asking about things like beans, potatoes beet etc.

Agree Stera. and you can grow most of these without full noon day sun! Let's get realistic in the north of Scotland for most of the year all of our gardens are in semi shade! Yet we still grow fruits and veggies along with a lot of flowers... It simply depends on what you are wanting to grow.
