I have just severely cut back two shrubs which do nothing but produce a lot of boring foliage. They were in the garden when I moved in and only once in nearly 14 years have I seen a flower. Is there a way of killing the root without having to get a man in to dig them out? One is among gladioli corms that I can afford to lose as they spread every year. Nothing else close by to harm.

You can treat the stumps with SBK - it will kill the roots but they will still be there until they rot which will take some time.
