Thanks BA, I am digging the couch grass out of a border and have found white bulbs with flattish foliage in clumps. I have also found some elongated brown bulbs. both are in the area where I have Ipheon and Rhodopsis. So any help would be gratefully received

Yes they do smell vaguely of onions and ours are not showing just yet.
What do you mean by Rhodopsis? This is a plant which is a Legume.

Right, just had a look and our Ipheiones are through. They do smell of onions, squeezed a leaf to check.
Rhodohypoxis are not bulbs, corms or tubers, they are dormant buds (I think) and look a bit like bits of dried peat.

A lot like the rest of us, Sbg! :) I have to proofread everything I write twice, and even that doesn't always help me! Cut and Paste are two of my dearest friends, closely followed by Backspace!

I have done a 175 page book and that was a nightmare.
I regularly read official reports for my hubby and they were full of equations and technical stuff too.

Ah, but reading someone else's work is easier than reading your own. You definitely read what ought to be there rather than what is and since you wrote it, it gets more and more tedious as you go through it. And the temptation to re-write and re-write is hard to resist.
Back to the question. Can you keep Rhodohypoxis alive in the garden? We don't. Ours are all in pots and keeping the mice out of them is not easy either.

I have had it survive for 3 years now. its in the rockery and gets quite dry in the summer.

It is over winter that they need to be perfectly dry. In Summer they can take as much water as they can get. The recommendation for outside growing is to put a sheet of glass or plastic over them for winter.

oh that's interesting I wonder why they have come back for me. not that I am complaining :o)
