i have just received prunus zika shidare sakura with three leaders and side shoots below graft one of shoots is only 9" above ground should i cut side shoots off?

No, not now - Prunus varieties should be pruned (if they need it) between April and July to reduce the risk of silverleaf infection.

Hum if the side shoots are below the graft don't they need to come off now Bamboo?

Oh, dear, sorry, I didn't notice that bit of the question, yes any shoots should be taken off if they're from below the graft, but you risk silverleaf infection if you take if off now - bit of a conundrum, that one.... I'd return it from whence it came, frankly, especially as there's more than one sucker... the supplier should have dealt with those earlier in the year, before sending out.

Yes that would be the sensible thing to do return to the supplier.

I would like to thank those who replied.
i am not a gardener but thought those growths shouldn't have been there. i have planted it now and dont want to go to bother of sending it back could i just take them off next year at the right time.
I have emailed Parker about it to hear what they have to say. Frankly I dont think i would use Parker again.

Well it might be alright to remove them now, but I'm assuming its a Prunus rootstock that's been used - Parkers might be able to tell you, though whether what they say will be part of the new 'post fact' universe is hard to say... Otherwise, remove in April next year.

Is it possible that rubbing the cut surfaces with cinnamon, then sealing, would prevent silver leaf?

23 Nov, 2016

Well its a thought, but pass, I've no idea... not sure about sealing though, at this time of year with the sap flow in reverse, there's a risk you'd be sealing the silverleaf in rather than keeping it out...

That's why I thought of the cinnamon, though I'm not sure that it would be effective. Wettable sulfur dust is also a possibility, though that may react badly with the sealant.

i would like to thank all who answered ill just cut them off in April.
My experience with parkers has been terrible taking there recommendation i ordered clematis along with tree to train up stem. they sent clematis 3 weeks before tree saying conditions weren't suitable for lifting tree Nov,
must have been waiting for frost and snow.
On asking about suckers they advised not to cut off.
On asking how to deal with suckers they are not answering my emails .
I am going to write to their head office. Thanks everybody for your time.
