Would shade affect the lower part of a climber?

One side of my garden is in shade due to a four foot fence which runs along the border. If I was to plant a climber that was long enough to reach the top of the fence would it thrive, as once out of the shade it would enjoy full sun? Thanks

Clematis fits that description - 'head in the sun, roots in shade'. You'd need a vigorous one though, to get it going. Other climbers might well also thrive once they got established.
