Ceanothus shrub/ tree 12 +/- years old blown down in high wind. If it is cut at its base will it recover as a shrub and if so how to encourage this?

Hi
Trouble with Ceanothus they get top heavy and fall over snow wind etc as you have found out , you need to plant them on a slant leaning in towards the fence or wall a good metre away I have found works well as most plant upright and too close and disaster normally follows.

I have a friend who fitted a strong chain to the house wall , hidden by the branches to keep it safe secured both sides on the main branch.

Personally I have found they dont respond to hard pruning ( cutting at the base) and it may die if you do, also 12 years old I doubt it will re grow.

Has the main stem broken with falling over ?

Remember the severe winter we had a few years back when many shrubs etc were decimated by the severe frosts hebe, cordylines, pittosporum, bay, eucalyptus and ceanothus, most of my clients had these shrubs, and whilst the top growth was killed off the root systems were ok, and so most of the shrubs responded well with ceanothus being one of them, but it takes time some ceanothus took until may to get going again, I am sure yours will respond, if it has bent over then look for some small green shoots on the main stem and prune hard to theseif it has a break then hard prune to this point, put a good sturdy rustic stake in for support and prune each year after flowering and try and keep it from getting into the clouds.

You can try cutting it right down, but frankly, Ceanothus are not long lived plants anyway - occasionally one keeps going for 20 years, but the expected life span in the UK is between 10-15 years, so you might be better off removing it and replanting with a new one, or something else.

Ours was shaded by a tree on one side and had grown one sided.. When the tree was removed i cut off the straggly struggling branches on that side right to one of the trunks and it has regenerated eventually but it took several years.. It is well over 20 years old now and looks very healthy. (Seems as though we've been lucky Bamboo!)

Aye, you have - one garden I knew had a fantastic large treelike one for nearly 23 years, but it just suddenly died.
