Hi. I have several varieties of fuchsia, some of which have rather straggly branches which leaves them looking rather bare. Can I cut them back to encourage thicker growth?

yes - but wait till end of March or early April, when growth is underway, then cut them right back. Doing it too early puts the plants at risk if the weather turns very cold again.

I agree they can be pruned back at the end of march early april. Mine are starting to show signs of growth and certainly need a good reshaping.

I've tried sometimes cutting them right to the ground and
other times, particularly after a mild winter when the stems are still live, just cutting half way. They tend to flower a little earlier the second way but only a couple of weeks difference.

Just read your second question - as they are only young ones yes cut them right back but not until you see new growth at the base and when no more frost is expected.

How do I say thanks?
