I have been digging up a large amount of very fine reddish roots from a border which have formed a tangled mass. They don't seem to be tree roots but can anyone suggest what they might be.

A large amount does sound like tree roots. Some conifers have roots like this, is there a hedge in the vicinity?

And "in the vicinity" may mean anywhere within 10 meters.

Thank you for your replies and apologies for the delayed response.
Yes there are two large conifers within 10 metres, I'm not sure what variety they are. So it could well be them.
Next time i visit the garden I will post photos of the roots and the conifers. The garden is in Gloucestershire but I live in Surrey

Another question...
Last night I neglected to protect Dahlia shoots from ground frost with result the leaves have turned floppy and dark green. Should I prune the leaves or just leave them?

What other plants have you got in that area,or can you remember if you dug anything out ? Maybe they are roots from something else..or some you didn't manage to remove ,at some point..A photo might help,if possible..Welcome to Goy...:o)
