I found small yellowish (in color) balls (a cluster) in my lawn near the base of a large oak tree. When I picked them up and squeezed them and they popped and it made a cracking sound. Does any one know what they are?

Sounds like a slow release fertilizer cluster, the sort of thing that looks like a cluster of small yellow balls shaped together into a sort of flat topped pyramid or sometimes other shapes, meant to be used usually by inserting into pots and containers.

How do I say thanks?
