Hi I had an oak tree removed last year but now the soil (and lawn) surrounding the area is covered in leaves. They are low at the moment but last year they grew a couple of feet in height. There seems to be a bigger spread this year. Should I dig them out and then cover with a weed membrane? Thanks

Hi Fanny and welcome to GoY. From what you say the tree was felled but the stump and/ or roots left in place these will continue to put up suckers on an annual basis. You'll need to have the stamp ground out or drill holes in a, very carefully, pour in something like SBK stump rotter and cover the holes with saucers of some description. Just trying to dig the suckers out won't work.

By leaves you must mean oak seedlings. Set your mower to a low position and cut them back and keep at it until you see them no longer. Though I have a strong suspicion that you are dealing with an entity other than oak seedlings. How about a photo of this area?

If they died right down to the ground over the winter they may well just be weeds of some sort. If they are seedlings or suckers there will be stems left sticking up all winter and new leaves will grow from them
Agree with Loosestrife, a photo would make it easier to help you.
