I have a row of 4 eucalyptus trees, planted about three years ago. They are now about 20 feet tall, but two of them are leaning at a considerable angle. Can I drag them back to upright by use of stakes or should I cut them down before they fall?

Do you know why they are leaning? Are they leaning away from a source of shade? Has the ground been shifting?
Also, did you stake them when they were young? Doing that will weaken the trunk and roots, and the tree will bend or lean over when the stakes are removed--or they break! If this is what has happened, and the soil is firm and no shade is involved, cut the leaning trees down to short stumps, choose the straightest sprout as the new trunk, cut off all of the others, and DO NOT STAKE THE NEW TRUNK. Sorry to "shout", but that last is very important.

Thanks Tugbrethil. The trunks were staked but broke away from the stakes in high winds. No shade problems so I guess your suggestion is the answer.

It works with leaning Eucalypts here and in California.

How do I say thanks?
