2nd question please. Regarding a black Hamburg grapevine. I purchased a grafted single stem in May 2015 which grew like mad in my UK greenhouse. I'm following the RHS pruning guide and want to know if that was classed as year 1. Last year I pruned the top growth in the winter and limited the side shoot length and had 2 small bunches of grapes. However I'm not sure whether I did the correct pruning. I pruned the main shoot again this January and since it came into growth I can already see bunches of flowers. Is it in year 2 or 3?

Too late to prune now you'll need to wait until it is dormant again. Grape vines are only pruned mid winter.

Thanks, moon grower, what I mean by pruning is , according to the RHS, I need to stop side growth to 2 leaves beyond a bunch of grape flowers. I had already cut back the leader in January but then wondered how many side shoots to let grow this year.

Yes you can do that Barbara

If the RHS guide is like the ones that I am familiar with, 2015 counts as year 1.
