Hi, I grow syringa 'Josee' I started it off in a pot for a couple of years then put in the border, it's been in the garden about 5 years now and it's about 4.5 ft it's done quite well :-)

We have one called Syringa pubescens subsp. microphylla Superba, I would imagine that it would grow nicely in a pot. Nicely scented too and even in the soil has not got as big as S.meyeri Palibin has.

I have a lemon one called primrose in a pot. I'm glad it is as there are loads of suckers around the rim of the pot. Rarely flowers so perhaps it isn't happy.

I wish I'd seen this earlier I would have taken a pic of mine, its been in the same pot for over ten years now, absolutely stunning at the moment Marjorie, all I have ever done is add a bit of fresh compost on occasion, poor thing thrives on neglect..

Thank you for suggestions they were very useful.
I have been to the local nursery this afternoon and purchased a Palibin purely because it was the only species they had. It has many buds so I'm going to wait patiently for it to bloom !!!?

I have 2 dwarfs called palibin . They have stayed dwarf and flower well. I don't think they have as much scent as the large shrubs but the pale lilac flowers are nice and compact. I can't see a problem in a container using John innes no3. I'm going to have ago making one into a standard this year.
