Help with my daughter's broadbeans please. Since moving here my daughter decided that the small veg plot in MY garden is hers lol. She has never really grown anything in her life but for the last 2 years she has started off broadbeans on her window sill, then brought them over to my greenhouse till they are big enough to plant out. Each time they have developed dead spots on the leaves, picture below. Can anyone tell me why this could be? She did some internet searching last year and thought it might be overwatering so lets them get quite dry, but I think it might be a pest? As always any help gratefully received. Jen

Thanks moon grower, I've only ever grown flowers or tomatoes but she said they are from seeds given by mother in law and now tells me meant to say are runner beans. What to do with her!!! Don't know what compose she has used but they haven't been watered in 4 days. Thanks again, will tell her to be more careful next time she waters them.

Ah runner beans they certainly could be. Snag is if the compost is waterlogged just not watering isn't going to help, are they in something like yoghurt pots and are there actually holes in the bottom?

Does she water them from can? If the brown spots are caused by burn from the sun shining through the droplets you might suggest she waters the soil direct, rather than sprinkling the whole thing.

They are in cups but she tells me she did put holes in bottom the other day when she said when she she told me she thought it maybe due to over watering. I have a small watering can but it doesn't have a rose anymore. Like you both say, I think she got water on them and needs to be more careful ?. After your 1st ànswer moon grower I said to her about it and she said she probably got water on. She asked me to ask and I sent her to take photos and send them to me so that's where mix up about what beans as she has broad beans going as well and told me wrong ones lol. Thanks both for your help. She used cups as she is so careful with money she squeaks as saving to buy a house.

I'm all for using cups and saving money, but tend to go one better and save our old yogurt pots (we use the big ones)which costs nothing at all...

Okay so there a holes in the bottom of the plastic cups but so far as I can see they are sitting in an ice-cream tub so still can't drain really... The cups need to sit on something where the water can drain away, even better water from the bottom and empty the tub after a short while. Oh and given the size of the seedlings and the size of the cups they will need repotting or planting out soon, though it is too early to plant out runner bean seedings. I realise your daughter is 'learning on the job' but the best way in my view to grow runner beans is to wait until late May or even early June and grow them in the soil, to beans to a cane, i.e. 6 beans round a wigwam of 3 canes...

Thanks will get her to read this when she comes into word tomorrow.
Sue, even as a small child she was careful with money lol. I'm sure seeing your comment she will probably start using yogurt tubs. ?

Lol, I'm the world's original miser....I think when you've once been hard up its bred into you...
Make sure she doesn't use the individual size pots as they aren't deep enough.
Its hard not to plant seeds too early when you're in a hurry for results isn't it?

Your daughter might want to try growing climbing beans instead of runners, they grow far more easily and can be started that bit earlier.

Thanks moon grower, I will tell her.

Lol Sue. Think you are right, money was tight before met hubby and was her and me but I'm glad she that way then just spending money. Hubby got her into the "good life" TV series ( she got in on DVD)and so that why growing veg, really just not interested in my flowers lol.

I loved that series (watched it on catch up) In case "climbing beans" confuses her tell her the packet will say Climbing French Beans.

Previous question
« I have ,at the bottom of my tomato plants, little white spikes. What are they?
Those don't look like broad bean leaves to me at all... are you sure they are? Difficult to tell from the photos but that compost still looks very wet to me. Water splashed on the leaves accidentally when the sun is on them can cause the leave to look like this. Those don't look like broad bean leaves to me at all... more like marrow or similar
