the root stock continued to grow
I have a 12foot tree and lots sharp needles

whar type of root stock was it

No idea but it needs removing as it certainly won't be an apricot!

Many wild forms of the Genus Prunus produce thorns, including some forms of Prunus x domestica--European plums, greengages, and damsons. Around here we usually use forms of peach to graft apricots on, but plums are certainly possible, and may even be preferable in colder climates.
