Black Stalks on my Potatoes

My Charlotte Potatoes have black stalks I've dug some up and they look grand but are they safe to eat? What caused this? How can I prevent it?

Does it look like blight? If so cut off all the potato foliage and either burn or put into your wheelie bin - do not compost, in fact it is never a good idea to compost potato foliage. Charlotte is an early potato so it could just be the foliage is dying back naturally. Yes the potatoes will be fine to eat but they will not keep for more than a week or so once dug.
