Sumac question, my beautifull stags horn has died, I planted it from a sucker some twenty years ago and has grown into a very large tree, last autumn it went to bed and has not woken up, it's completely dead, my question is do they have a life span of so many years, I have come across dead sumacs many times over the years on my garden rounds but there has never been any sign of insect or fungus problems,however the sumac in my garden does have several large healthy suckers which have grown up from the base over the past three years, would just like to know why the main tree has died, thanks Julien.

According to the link below (under cultivation, near the end), single stem or tree like plants are shortlived , but coppicing to encourage a thicket means they live longer, so that might explain it, see here
