why are my runner beans that are planted in the garden not doing very well the leaves are small and not very green and they are way behind beans planted at the same time in a planter?

By a planter, do you mean a container? Sometimes the potting compost in containers warms up faster than the soil in gardens. Is there a difference in the sun exposure or fertilizing between the two?
